In this rather introductory paper, I reviewed the history of psychoanalysis very briefly, especially in terms of ’ego psychology’ Within this new concept, ’anxiety’ and ’defense’ were understood from the different perspective from they had been under the rubric of ’id psychology’ Technical issue such as ’ego splitting’ into the ’observing ego’ on one hand at the ’experiencing ego’ on the other hand within the analytic situation was emphasized inrather schematic may. Frend’s ’The Ego and Id’ (1923), Heinz Hartmann, Anna Frend, Edith Jacob-son, and Margaret mahler are only few examples to represent the ’ego psychology’
